The security researchers of Check Point Research (CPR), the research department of Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), publish their annual comparison of virtual attacks. The data comes from our own ThreatCloud, which is networked worldwide.
Everywhere, the number of attacks on corporate networks increased sharply. In Austria by 117 percent, in Germany by 62 percent and in Switzerland by 65 percent. In terms of industries, the government /military divisions in Austria were under constant fire and recorded an increase of 219 percent compared to 2020. This is followed by the finance / banking divisions with 203 percent and software vendors with 147 percent. Europe as a region saw an increase of 68 percent of all virtual attacks – in percentage terms, this is the strongest compared to other areas.

The security researchers saw a late peak in December because of the Log4J vulnerability, which affects almost every system in the world. Omer Dembinsky, Data Research Manager at Check Point, explains: “The number of cyber attacks peaked towards the end of the year, mainly due to attempts to exploit the LOG4J vulnerability. New penetration techniques and circumvention methods have made it much easier for hackers to carry out malicious intentions. It is particularly disturbing that some important social sectors are high on the list of the most frequently attacked areas. The education system, the authorities and the health care system have made it into the top 5 worldwide.
I expect that all these figures will increase in 2022, as hackers will look for new methods of conducting attacks, in particular ransomware attacks. We are thus in a cyber pandemic, if you will. I recommend that the public, especially in the education, government and health sectors, familiarize themselves with the basics of their own IT protection. Various measures, such as the installation of patches, the segmentation of networks and the training of employees, can already make the networks much more secure.“
