Google Cloud shares its own security code with customers

On the occasion of the Google Cloud Security Summit, the Internet giant has announced that it will make part of its open source security code hardened for internal use available to its cloud customers. […]

Google Cloud, by its own admission, is taking steps to improve cyber security on the Internet and for this reason is providing part of its own security code consisting of open source components as a paid service. This is to sail under the name Assured Open Source Software.

At the announcement, Sunil Potti, vice president and general manager of Google Cloud, cited in a virtual press conference as the reason for the move that open source software has become a major target for cybercriminals. In this connection, he spoke of a global 650 percent increase in open source software supply chain attacks in recent times.

“A perfect storm is looming,” says Potti, concluding that “we have to step up our game. We should find a way to stay one step ahead of the threats”.

As a result, Google Cloud now provides security software that, on the one hand, was originally developed for its own internal use, on the other hand, consists of general open source packages in which the origin of the source code and related dependencies were checked by Google and tapped for vulnerabilities.

Other initiatives

In addition to “Assured Open Source”, Google has announced another initiative called “Security Foundation Solution”. It is a package of Google Cloud recommended products and security features developed and tested by Google. In addition, Google wants to provide its customers with tools to implement security concepts such as zero Trust and other measures to combat cyber attacks in their own company.

Google Cloud has summarized all projects and offers in this blog post.
